In your job you will have your day to day role and responsibilities but also a commitment to the company as a whole. This means that you should help improve the company’s performance as much as you can. This will not only help the company but also yourself as you will be recognised for your hard work and it will aid your career progression. Firstly you need to understand your company and what they need and then be on the lookout for opportunities to help them and work out how to use them. Make sure your boss is aware of your proactive approach and be proud of your achievements.

Understanding Your Company

When you join a new company you will probably have done a limited amount of research on the them but know about their dealings in details. Once you start your new job take the time to look at them in more detail. Read up on the company reports and literature and look at any independent resources. Track their performance and concentrate on the areas that they need to improve on. Try to look at where they want the company to go and what they need in order to get it there.

How To Find Opportunities

Once you are more aware of what your company’s goals are and understand their performance, you can start looking for opportunities to improve it. You won’t be able to jump straight in but will slowly become more aware. Watch and listen to your colleagues and managers and learn from what they do. Think about a proactive approach, taking ideas from other companies or working with clients or suppliers to improve performance.

How To Use Opportunities

If you think you have spotted a great opportunity to improve your company’s performance then you need to try and make use of it. Look at the situation and plan the steps that you need to take to put it into action. Ask others for advice or guidance when you are first starting out and use it as a learning process. You will soon develop your own style and approach and have more confidence and success.

Career Progression

Any company will appreciate its employees who actively look for ways to improve its performance. Showing that you are committed to your job and the company will impress your boss. Decide where you would like your career to progress and use their opportunities to prove that you have the skills and attitude to move onward and upwards within the company and beyond.

For some people a job is a just a pay cheque and they don’t care very much about the company itself. To progress your career you need to prove that you are committed to the company and have a proactive approach to your work. Learn as much as you can about your company’s performance and then look for opportunities to improve it. Develop your own style and make sure that people are aware of what you are doing.
